THINGS TO DO FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN.
Aeon has always made it a huge priority to be a safe family friendly event. As the festival has grown so has the budget to bring on board more children’s activities and entertainment. This year we have permission to use additional land at the festival site so we are able to have completely seperate family camping for those who want/need an early night and a bit of peace and quiet.
Family camping will be situated next to the cricket ground. It is flat with good terrain and close to the car park for ease of access. There will be showers to use in the cricket ground pavilions, plenty of toilets and its well lit at night.
BBQs are permitted but not open camp fires or disposable BBQs.
Dogs must be kept on leads AT ALL TIMES in the family camping area. Please respect thy neighbours!
Teenagers are permitted to camp in this area with their families if they wish but must respect the need for peace and quiet, early bedtimes and even earlier mornings!
2009 saw more children than ever at the festival doing everything from Forest School crafts, art workshops, graffiti workshops and circus skills, pottery painting and our very own Parent and Toddler group run by the Busy Being crew, complete with nappy changing and feeding station! All of this runs alongside the main stage area at the Amphitheatre so that parents can enjoy what is going on whilst safe in the knowledge that their children are ok and have plenty to do. More activities are being booked this year for older children so watch this space.
The festival site is small and intimate but with plenty of wide open space. The ground is fairly level for those with buggys and it drains well so if we do have rain you hopefully won't be clogging up your wheels with gunk.
If your considering taking your children to a festival for the first time we would definately recommend it - It's a fantastic social environment with everyone from all walks of life. There are some things to bear in mind though:
- All events have a massive resposiblity in their licensing for 'The prevention of children from harm' We do everything possible to ensure the programming of the event and the infrastructure is in place to ensure safety and wellbeing of all festival goers. However your child remains your responsibily for the weekend as their parent/carer. Certain areas of the festival such as the dance tent and the bar area in the evenings are not suitable for young children. Also directly infront of stage areas where there is a high volume of noise. You will be asked to move from here if we deem it inappropriate.
- Bring a box of toys and stuff to do. Sometimes kids just want to lie around not have to focus on any other activities. Stick a label on a favourite toy/teddy so that if it gets lost we can return it to you.
- Bring a pushchair/pram or a wheelbarrow (!) even if your child wants to run around and insists on walking everywhere. They'll get tired and theres nothing worse than wanting to watch a band or chat with friends without having somewhere safe for your child to sleep. Even an 8 year old will sleep in a wheelbarrow if they're tired enough and the ground is wet!
- Bring plenty of blankets and warm clothes plus extra nappies. In fact spare everything! Also don't forget sunscreen - We have had sunshine the last 3 years, fingers crossed eh.
- Children's snacks and drinks should also be brought with you as although we have great catering sometimes there are queues!
- Our crew are not allowed to treat any first aid situations. You must use the medical services on site for any accidents. Also bring a small first aid kit for any bumps or bruises.
CHARITIES
We like to be involved with charities and for the past couple of years have been delighted to have The Book Cycle and The Snooky Trust involved at the festival running their trade stands to raise funds for their causes. This year we welcome them both back but we are also excited to be helping raise money for a national charity as well.
We are going to be running The Guesty List system, where all our lucky people who get guest passes with performers and crew will be asked to donate up to £5 towards The Teenage Cancer Trust. If you would like to get involved click on the link below to see what other things they do. We will also be have collection buckets at the festival for this very worth while cause.
BOOK-CYCLE

Reg charity. 1127078
A revolutionary bookshop, not only can you “pay whatever you wish” for any of its books, but they use the proceeds to send free books to schools and orphanages in developing countries and as well as planting trees across the U.K.
An entirely volunteer run charity, Book-Cycle also promotes local artists, from graffiti workshops to theatrical spaces.
Recently they have managed to move from book parcels to whole containers, firstly to Mombasa, Kenya, for distribution to surrounding countries.
Their next shipment is bound for six school libraries in Ghana
CAMPING
This year we have permission to use additional land so we can have completely separate family camping. This means more peace and quiet for parents and children at night and those who want to stay up late and party will be able to lie in in the morning without being disturbed - Hoorah!
Please note if you are arriving with a caravan you will be parked in the campervan field and will then have to unhitch and move your car to the main parking. No cars will be allowed in the camping or campervan fields during the event. You will not be able to take your car in the camping fields to unload or pack up so travel light!
If you would like to be super posh or even just mildy civilised then you can book a tipi this year with the lovely MyTipi people. Go directly to their website to enquire about prices and bookings and they will do the rest. You can arrive at the festival to find your very own fab tipi awaiting you like the intrepid explorers you are. MyTipi have been supplying festivals with their beautiful tipis for a while now...Make your festival stay extra special by staying in one of these majestic and luxurious structures.
Head over to the Festivals and Gatherings page at
www.mytipi.co.uk for more info and booking.
FANCY DRESS
We theme the festival each year to help with ideas for decor and such stuff. We also like people to dress up! This year its Global Safari - The Big Adventure and the set design will vary from The Temple Of Dance to The Artic Palace. We also want to see how many children can come dressed as Penguins as this will be uber cute and will create our very own penguin enclosure in the kids area with small people waddling around looking scrummy!
CINEMA
We have always celebrated independent film at Aeon and last years Cinema area was really wicked, showcasing award winning short films and feature length documentaries as well as work produced by local and regional film makers. This year we have a special treat as the Vintage Mobile Cinema will be in residence. Built just after World War 2 it is the only one left of its kind and has been fully restored to its original splendor by a Devon based company. Check it out
HERE. Its really is gorgeous.
WORKSHOPS
There are lots of things to do at Aeon from Green Woodwork and crafts to graffiti workshops and circus skills. Our very special parent and toddler group will get the smallest of people up to their ears in pigment paints and things. Forest School runs for bigger little people. Theres an arts area where you can paint pottery and create lovely thingsWe have also arranged Tai Chi sessions, circuit bending workshops with George Lazenbleep, plus a whole loads of other lovely things to get involved with.
THE NONSENSE POLICE
We have commendeered a small chosen few who have been recognised for their 'Outstanding Contribution to Tomfoolery and Baffoonery' to be our resident onsite walk about. They will be bringing you such delights as Bubble Wrap rolling, Glitter Paddling Pool Wrestling, Sports Wars, The Devon Derby and a whole load of other things to get you messy, sweaty and smiling!
LITTER
All festivals create lots of litter and all things being relative all festivals end up spending a huge amount of money on dealing with it! We have gone from a trailer load the first year to about 8 tonnes of the stuff. Which isn't much compared to the big festivals but it's still alot to deal with. As we don't have a huge budget we try and get everyone pro-active in keeping the site clear and for the most part this works. This year we will be trying to hand out bin bags at the start to all festival goers to help keep their patch clean and tidy. We will also have more bins in place. But its still alot of hauling rubbish for the crew. So please use the bins and we will try and keep up with emptying them. There will be seperate bins for cans and general landfill plus all our caterers and the bar use compostable cups and plates. Lets continue to do our bit to keep Shobrooke looking gorgeous please!
FOOD & DRINK
We are great believers in sourcing locally produced food ere in Devon as it really is rather lush. So with that in mind we use local companies run by local people! They have fresh produce delivered on site each day from the neighbouring town of Crediton and its all lovingly prepared in the cafes just as you like it. All the caterers use compostable plates and tings to keep things as green as possible. They're all registered with the local council too so you know its not a hick production. There will be a wide selection of veggie and non veggie meals as well as pancakes, burgers plus a mini farmers style market selling cakes, deli produce and other supplies.
Our bar is run by our very own Aeon Bar Crew and is an important part of the whole Aeon thing. Without it we wouldn't survive as without sponsorship or funding things always happen by the seat of our pants. The prices are more competitive than many pubs and clubs as you can get a decent pint for £2.50 - £2.70. We stock a wide range of Real Ales as well as Ciders plus the usual Lager on tap, spirits, soft drinks. There will be guest ciders from local micro breweries as well as big jugs.. of Pims! We use Maize Starch glasses as they are fully biodegradable. You can bring your own too but please don't go over board as without our bar there would be no Aeon. Simples. DON'T FORGET NO GLASS ON SITE PLEASE!
If you are local and just coming to the festival by car on day tickets don’t forget the usual laws still apply with drink driving. There will be police on site and response cars in the area at the end of each night. Make sure you have a designated driver. The main road past the festival site is very fast so be aware if you are walking home. use of Shuttle Service or book a taxi.
DISABLED ACCESS
We can help sort out parking nearer to the main site for disabled festival goers if arranged in advance. The site is fairly level and we have disabled toilets on both the main site and in the camping field. Please email us if you require more information. We can charge wheelchair batteries if arranged in advance. Disabled festival goers are entitled to a free carer pass but this must be arranged in advance by emailing Niki. Carers passes are not posted out but held at the festival site office. You will need to bring ID and proof that you are in receipt of disability allowance to claim your free pass.
CAMPERVANS
We have a separate field for Campervans and Caravans and if you bring a Live In vehicle you will need a £5 campervan pass purchasd in advance. These can only be bought in conjunction with weekend tickets and are limited. If you bring a caravan you will need to unhitch and park your car in the main parking. Its only a short walk. Cars will not have access to the campervan field and although you can have awnings and 1 small tent anyone wanting to stay next to you with tents will not be allowed to due to Health and Safety. This is fairly standard these days for all licensed events so it's not just us being meanies.
TOILETS
Our loo's are really good. They're not posh but they're kept pristine all weekend long. In fact we were in the top 10 in the country in the UK Festival Awards for having nice loo's in 2008! We had really nice loo's in 2009 but didnt enter the festival awards as we kind of forgot. Anyway we keep the toilets topped up with loo roll all weekend and they're emptied twice aday and cleaned 3 times a day. If you spot a poo loo please report it to a steward who can get a message to one of us to clean it up.
LOST PROPERTY
We have a site office situated near the main stage so please hand in any lost property you may have found there. If you have lost something you can leave a detailed description, phone number, address and email address at the site office and we will try and get things back to you if they are found.
FAQs
Why are the tickets a bit more expensive this year? Because we are now at the stage of having to be VAT registered and also for the long term survival of an event it has to make a little bit of money to act as a buffer in lean times. We have never made a profit and this is not our reason for running the festival. The festival has no form of sponsorship or funding and relies on ticket sales and profit from our bar to sustain the event. Its something we hang on to dearly inspite of being offered stuff on a regular basis. So the additional cost of £5 per day goes towards VAT and PRS as well as hire of the beautiful site. Youth tickets are set at last years price and Children under 13 still get in free. See the ticket page for more info.
Can we bring the dog? Yes! But please make sure it behaves and that you pick up it's poo.
DOGS MUST BE KEPT ON A LEAD ON THE MAIN SITE.
Can we bring the kids? Definately! The more the merrier as it's what makes festivals so special.
Can we park next to our tents? No, unfortunately we are unable to have parking and camping together.
Can we arrive early? Yes! You can arrive between 4pm and 11pm Thursday 26th August. The main site will be closed until Friday morning.
Can we bring a campervan/caravan or truck/lorry/horsebox? Yes, we have a seperate field for this. It will be over the road in the original parking field. If you have friends at the festival in tents though they will have to be based in the camping field. Awnings are fine.
Do we have showers? Yes we will! The Cricket Club will hopefully be hiring their posh ones out again and will have their new club house up and running plus we will have showers in the crew area next to the main site. You will be able to buy shower tickets for £1 each from the ticket gate on the bridge.
Are there shops near by? Crediton is just a 5 minute drive from the festival site so you'll find plenty of shops and a petrol station near by if you need to stock up enroute. We are hoping to have more provisions onsite this year such as milk and rizlas etc.
Cash machines? Work in progress, watch this space!.
Phone charging? No sorry, however if there is an accident/emergency we will make arrangements to contact relatives.
Can we bring our own drink? Yes, but please NO GLASS. You can decant wine in to plastic bottles if your posh!! Also we stock cold drinks, local ales, cider and spirits in the bar which runs from midday to midnight each day.
Do i need to bring ID? Yes its probably best if you look under 21 as our bar staff have a legal responsiblity to check if they suspect underage drinking. The usual laws apply as in the outside world.
Can we swim in the lake? No please don't.
Is there security at the festival? Yes, we have 24hr security on site and they are there for the wellbeing of all festival goers and crew. If they suspect anything untoward they have the right to search you and also report any incidents to the police.
Is there medical welfare at the festival? Yes, we have a professional medical crew on site 24hrs a day. They are trained paramadics and have an ambulance and all the equipment needed for an emergency if something should happen. If you suffer from any allegies, are diabetic or have other medical conditions don't forget to bring your medication or epi-pens.
Some crime prevention advice we borrowed from the Bestival website!
Do not attempt to bring illegal drugs into the festival.
Searches will be carried out. This includes NOS as supply is illegal - It is an offence under Section 52 of the Medicines Act 1968 to supply the gas for inhalation. The maximum sentence is two years imprisonment and an unlimited fine.If you take prescribed medication keep it with you at all times.
Only bring with you what you can afford to lose.
Remember, there’s no way you can make a tent 100% secure.
Mark you property.
Label your belongings with your postcode.
Protect your mobile phone.
Do this now: on your mobile phone key in *#06# and your unique International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number will be displayed. Make a note of this number so that if you lose your phone or if it is stolen you can contact your service provider to have the phone immobilised.
Keep cash and possessions on you.
But don’t keep all your money, bank cards and valuables together — spread them around in different pockets.
Aeon is a fairly small festival, it has a fantastic atmosphere and is really chilled out. We are lucky to have had very few incidents over the past 4 years. If however you are unfortunate to become a victim of crime report it immediately to a steward or a member of the site office crew. There will be police on site a various intervals and we can get the information to them if required. If you spot anything untoward or suspicious report it to a steward or the security immediately.
